A divided Supreme Court upheld a Los Angeles zoning ordinance that bars operation of more than one adult entertainment business at a single location.
In a victory for Los Angeles, the U.S. Supreme Court reversed a 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals' ruling on Los Angeles v. Alameda Books, upholding the city's ordinance prohibiting the operation of adult businesses that both sell adult products and contain facilities to view adult movies or videos. Justice Sandra Day O'Connor stated for the majority that Los Angeles may rely on its 1977 secondary effects study, even though it did not specifically look at such combined adult business uses.
