Development in the inner-city is a whole different ballgame than thesuburban-style development that is predominant in California.
Marva Smith Battle-Bey, president and CEO of the Vernon Slauson Economic Development Corporation in Los Angeles, recently spoke with California Planning & Development Report about her organization and the challenges of developing land in the inner-city. Vermont-Slausons latest project is a 60,000-square-foot retail center featuring one of the first Los Angeles-area markets operated by Gigante Supermarkets, a major chain from Mexico. The center broke ground on April 29, the 10th anniversary of the Los Angeles civil unrest.
