Lauren K. Ohnesorge shares the results of a recent study that ranks the strength of the life sciences industry in the nation's metropolitan areas. Boston leads the list.
"In the latest Life Sciences Cluster report, put out by commercial real estate firm Jones Lang LaSalle, the Raleigh-Durham metro, once again, ranks fourth behind Boston, San Francisco and San Diego." Moreover, "[the] New York and Los Angeles metros are [catching up to Raleigh Durham], each rising two lots to fill 5th and 6th place, respectively," writes Ohnesorge.
To explain about the cities that fared well in the most recent edition of the study: "According to the report writers, clusters with a large presence of small startups, mid-tier biotech companies and specialty companies flourished in 2013. Clusters that relied on titans alone, such as large headquarter campuses, 'generally' experienced a decline in employment, according to the report."
