The National Coalition for Safer Roads "is partnering with organizations and communities across the country to raise awareness about the dangers of red-light running during National Stop on Red Week."
Each day of the week, the National Coalition for Safer Roads website will focus on the safety concerns associated with red light running. Sunday, August 3 detailed the effects of red-light running, including these two tragic data points:
- More than 8,700 people were killed in one year by intersection or intersection-related traffic accidents, according to the most recent statistics available from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)
- Red-light running is the leading cause of urban crashes, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
Messaging from later in the week includes Tuesday's "The Faces of Red-Light Running" and Thursday's focus on local and state statistics for red-light running.
