On Wednesday, officials celebrated the final fiscal installment of the $2.3 billion 10-mile BART extension planned to open in 2018.

According to the San Jose Mercury News, the line running south from Warm Springs BART Station in Alameda County through the Milpitas and Berryessa stations will be completed in late 2017, with passenger transport starting in 2018. The BART to San Jose's first phase begun building on April 12th, 2012.
The second phase of the project will connect BART to Downtown San Jose's future transportation hub at Diridon Station, and then head North towards Santa Clara's Caltrain Station. However, according to VTA officials, funding for the second phase is not yet secured.
Despite three governors and ups and downs within California's economy, according to the article, the persistence of local and state officials made it possible to secure the funding necessary to build and complete the project.
