Stanford researcher Clayton Hurd is studying the Tres Colonias, an overarching name for three neighborhoods in Fort Collins, Colorado, with dwindling numbers of Hispanic homeowners facing mounting gentrification pressures.
As part of an overarching two to three-year project, Clayton Hurd and research assistant Anna Crookston-Herschlag performed qualitative interviews on gentrification and social inclusion with 24 Hispanic residents of the Tres Colonias neighborhoods earlier this year.
According to Sarah Jane Kyle at The Coloradoan, the Tres Colonias neighborhoods "over the past two decades have seen new businesses, such as breweries, moving closer to them. They've also seen an increase in affluence as new residents moved in and updated or rebuilt homes."
Hurd plans to publish the results officially in 2015, after completing a formal analysis. However, already some of the predominant themes emerging from the interviews are "increased traffic and safety concerns, noise issues, problems with neighboring breweries and residents feeling disenfranchised by their city government."
