East Boston has benefited from a thriving arts community, raising fears of gentrification.
"Artists say they love Eastie's ethnic diversity, its downtown views, and the light. But their arrival in the neighborhood could signal the beginning of the end of its most attractive feature: relatively low housing costs. In the last two decades, artists have helped gentrify the South End, Jamaica Plain, and South Boston's Fort Point Channel, only to be forced out, along with many longtime residents, when prices in those newly hip neighborhoods rose too high. Places like Chelsea and East Boston may be next."
