A small non-profit in Portland, Oregon is attempting to provide neighborhood-based historic and cultural information for residents and tourists in specific, unique ways.
As posted by Evelyn Thorne on Urbanful, the Portland-based Know Your City is trying to educate Portlanders on the rich history and culture in their city, and what factors have shaped it to be what it is today.
According to Thorne, "The small nonprofit offers a wide variety of programs that aim to educate people about their present communities by looking at the past. Its public tours are led by experts with first-hand knowledge of social issues, such as the state of Portland’s independent music industry, or why Portland is known as one of the whitest cities in the country."
Three of the tours discussed are the Sing a Song of Portland! Tour, a musical tour focusing on Portland's independent music scene led by local troubadour Lukas Borsten, the DIY PDX Tour explaining that policies that lead to Portland's homemade culture of craft beer and artistries, and the Multicultural Portland Tour, which discusses Portland's Chinese immigration history.
