Meant as the precursor for a larger program and delayed from an expected summer launch, Dallas launched its first bikeshare system with two rental kiosks for use around Fair Park.
Tom Benning reports that the city of Dallas last week launched its Trek bikeshare system.
"The City Council in March approved giving $125,000 to the nonprofit Friends of Fair Park to install and operate two bike rental stands at the 277-acre park. It was seen as the start of a broader bike-share program the city hopes to roll out in the coming years."
Already, the program weathered the controversial question of helmets—the city revised its bike helmet law to be apply for children under the age of 18 before the system was installed. Others were critical of the program's modest scale, "arguing that such a small start — 16 bikes in total — might underwhelm and then jeopardize the larger vision."
