After 50 years of zoning out, Chicago is reforming its code.
Chicago's 45-year-old zoning ordinance is getting a comprehensive overhaul. A round of public meetings will give residents a chance to offer input on recommendations for reducing condominium building heights, prohibiting blank walls on downtown streets, and increasing the supply of affordable housing, among other recommendations. The city says it will put the new zoning ordinance and maps on its website, and provide more manuals, guidelines, and instructions on how to comply with zoning regulations. The Chicago Tribune notes that the key to it all will be the way the proposals are written into the new ordinance, which is expected to come to a city council vote in late fall.
