A new retail center planned for the location of the former home of the San Francisco 49ers will serve as a hub of activity for 12,000 housing units in the planning pipeline over the next ten to 20 years.
"The former stadium at Candlestick Point will become home to a 500,000-square-foot “urban outlet” shopping center under a new agreement reached between home builder Lennar Corp. and retail developer Macerich," reports J.K Dineen.
"The shopping center would be designed as a pedestrian-friendly retail anchor for a $1 billion development that will eventually include 6,000 homes…" Another development on nearby Hunters Point, dubbed the Shipyard, includes 1,400 homes in its first phase.
And in one of the cities at the forefront of the affordability crisis, "[one-third] of all the housing in Candlestick and Hunters Point Shipyard will be below market rate."
