Metropolitan Atlanta accounts for half of the pedestrian fatalities in Georgia. One pedestrian advocacy group is doing the legwork to begin the process of improving the city's pedestrian infrastructure.
Ian Sansom provides inside access to a road safety audit process in Atlanta focusing on MLK and Ralph David Abernathy Boulevard (RDA) in Southwest Atlanta. The audit was the work of the PEDS advocacy group, working with the Georgia Department of Transportation.
Sansom reports that current conditions were less than ideal for pedestrians on the two corridors: "Both roads lack safe crossings and curb ramps. Skewed intersections create additional challenges. Sidewalks are narrow – and far too many driveways exist. And like elsewhere in Atlanta, broken sidewalks are common."
Sansom later notes some reasons for optimism about the future role of these corridors, especially once the Atlanta Beltline is completed.
