On Places, a report by Lawrence Vale and colleagues from MIT's Resilient Cities Housing Initiative, who traveled to Banda Aceh, Indonesia, to study post-disaster planning and housing a decade after the tsunami that devastated the region on December 26, 2004. They present three case studies from villages near Banda Aceh and conclude: "Residents are better able to meet that challenge when post-disaster housing meets the four criteria we have identified: when it supports economic livelihood, reduces environmental risks, enhances personal security, and improves the means for self-governance, even in fractured communities."
