The Trust for Public land scored a major funding victory in an effort to save 1,000 acres of forest known as The Preserve in Connecticut.
"The [Connecticut] State Bond Commission on Monday approved $2 million in funding toward the purchase of The Preserve, the 1,000-acre forest in Old Saybrook, Essex and Westbrook," reports Judy Benson. The Preserve includes "watersheds of three rivers that flow directly into Long Island Sound."
Lori Fernand, associate director of philanthropy for the Trust for Public Land told Benson that the approval is "a major hurdle in securing the money needed to complete the purchase by early February."
The Trust for Public Land is leading the effort to conserve The Preserve as open space. According to Benson, the property has been the site of a development proposal and is owned by River Sound Development LLC.
