A new report by from the WRI Ross Center for Sustainable Cities’ EMBARQ initiative provides evidence of the benefits of safe, well-designed BRT and bus priority systems.
"Every year, more than 1.2 million people die in traffic crashes worldwide, equivalent to nearly five Boeing 747 plane crashes every day," according to an article by Holger Dalkmann and Jose Luis Irigoyen.
The article proposes bus rapid transit—or "bus priority systems," as the article calls them—as a solution to the "rising motorization trends in cities worldwide and the issue of road equity." The article introduces the Traffic Safety on Bus Priority Systems, funded by Bloomberg Philanthropies by claiming that it "will help transport planners, engineers, and urban designers develop the best solutions for their cities’ specific challenges and create safer, more accessible cities for all. Most importantly, they help city leaders around the world properly integrate traffic safety into transport policy, finance, planning, and design."
