The government is edging for control of a popular recreation trail through rural Massachusetts, and part of a 200-mile network.

"While conceding the designation sounds positive at first, Jones said it would have a chilling effect on landowners who now cheerfully agree to let trails run through their property, if they suddenly can't sell a parcel of land for development or start up a springwater-tapping operation... The M&M didn't need fixing, said Jones, the energetic scion of the North Amherst lumber company with a fierce libertarian bent. Besides, she said, the real problem is that federal control increases the likelihood of restrictions on the land through which the trail passes - including possible land-takings, which occurred along the Appalachian Trail."
