This report, commissioned by the American Public TransportationAssociation and written by three top economists, finds that increasing public transportation ridership is the mostefficientway to better air quality and decrease energy use without imposing newtaxes, government mandates or regulations. For example, the report notesthat if 20 percent of Americans used public transportation daily, itwouldreduce carbon monoxide pollution by more than the total produced by theentire chemical manufacturing industry and all metal processing plantsinthe country. The report calculates the energy and environmental savingsformore than a dozen major U.S. cities. Editor's note: This link is to a 39-page PDF file and is 164 K.
