As the birthplace of the parklets movement, San Francisco and the surrounding Bay Area have lots of parklet eye candy to choose from.
San Francisco Chronicle Architecture Critic John King offers a photo tour of the bay Area's many parklets, starting with the city's nascent efforts with Park(ing) day and into the many influential parklets around the city and beyond.
The slideshow released this week follows on an article written by King in March explaining how the parklet movement took hold in San Francisco and spread globally. According to King, in fact, "these diminutive nooks are San Francisco’s most influential urban design innovation going back decades."
As documented, in part, by the slideshow, there are now 50 parklets in existence in San Francisco, with more 25 or so more in with works. The slideshow also includes an example of a parklet found across the Bay in Berkeley and renderings for another on the way.
