Durham officials approve a $43.2 million subsidy for one of the nation's largest historic renovation projects, aimed at revitalizing downtown Durham.
"If completed, the development would be the largest historic renovation ever in North Carolina and one of the biggest in the nation in terms of both size and investment, according to preservation experts... Capitol Broadcasting pledged to redevelop the massive cigarette plant across from Durham Bulls Athletic Park into an office complex with shops, restaurants and perhaps a hotel. The company estimates the project will bring 3,600 new jobs to downtown."
