A growing number of residents and cities are finding that development adjacent to lakes is a way to dramatically improve the quality of life.

"The Clarks are among a growing number of Americans fleeing the confines of the big city for the natural beauty, convenience and recreational allure of lakefront living. Many of these people crave the chance to live near water. Others choose to live on a lake because it means at least one side of their house will be free from encroaching construction... Cities and counties across the nation are tapping into this demand. Take Greensboro, where the sidewalk of the revitalized downtown is lined with shade trees and antique shops. The city and this part of Georgia are booming because of growth around Lake Oconee, a 19,000-acre lake with 374 miles of shoreline."
