Faced with a proliferation of appalling apartment buildings, New South Wales mandates that architects design the buildings.
"In what may be a world first for the architectural professison, the New South Wales State Government announced on July 17 2002 that the developers of all "multi-unit residential buildings" - apartment blocks, in other words - must employ a registered architect to design the buildings. The new law has been enacted in response to growing concern at government level over the proliferation of appalling meanly designed blocks of rental dwelling units constructed as free standing pavilions - often separated by a metre or less from neighbouring developments - whose entire ground area is concreted over as parking space."
