City And Business Leaders Favor Dedicated Transit Lanes

Washington DC leaders are considering changing K Street, a major east-west arterial, to provide bus or light rail lanes in the center median.

K Street is now a boulevard with two outer (one for service & right turns, one for parking) and two inner (through travel) lanes in each direction. The DC DOT and local business leaders want to use an upcoming repaving project to reconfigure K Street to three through lanes (two for through travel, one for parking) in each direction, plus two transit lanes in the median. This solution promises to help drivers, transit users, and pedestrians during rush hour. It also offers capacity for new transit services connecting Union Station, the new convention center, and Georgetown.
