A complete streets makeover for a stretch of Queens Quay in Toronto earns high praise.
"The recently-opened stretch [of Queens Quay] between Bay and Spadina isn't just the best new street in Toronto," writes Christopher Hume, "it's the most democratic."
Hume writes that Queens Quay is the city's first thoroughfare for everyone: "That means pedestrians, cyclists, skate boarders, roller bladers, babies in strollers, transit passengers, wheelchair users and, yes, drivers."
So far even Mayor John Tory is on board with the concepts employed by Queens Quay, despite his high profile opposition to a plan to remove the Gardiner Expressway along the city's waterfront.
Hume is effusive in his description of the new Queens Quay, right down to the infrastructural and design details of the street's new look. West 8 is the landscape architecture firm of record, after winning the redesign competition for the project a decade ago.
