Arson Strikes Historic Home, Developer Charged

One of Austin's historically black neighborhoods, Clarksville, could lose its historical designation after a home was destroyed by arson in May.

The 1920's house had been purchased by a Dallas real estate development firm to be remodeled or torn down and replaced. "Austin firefighters this week got a warrant for the arrest of a Dallas developer on charges of arson. They say he hired a worker to torch the house on May 31 after learning that the city likely wouldn't allow him to tear it down to build a triplex. Such limitations on redevelopment are among the benefits of being in an historic areas."
