Major Expansion Plan For D.C. Metro Rail

A 10-year, $12 billion plan announced yesterday for the D.C. Metro rail will include trolleys, light rail, and rapid bus lines.

"The $12.2 billion plan would provide 114 miles of transit service, expanding on Metro's 103-mile subway system. Most of the new lines would consist of light rail (the modern equivalent of streetcars) or bus rapid transit, often described as 'a railroad on rubber tires,' in which buses run in special lanes on roads but with the frequency of subway trains. The plan also would provide hundreds of traditional buses and subway cars to relieve current crowding."
