Overpopulation and urban sprawl threatenes historic zone in Mexico City.

Population growth and illegal development in Mexico City, already home to 20 million inhabitants, is threatening the tranquil canals of Xochimilco, a World Heritage Site dedicated by UNESCO in 1987. "The biggest threat by far, however, is the exploding human population, and what Mexicans refer to as the 'mancha urbana,' or urban stain."
