Eight Madera County, CA farmers have drawn a line in the soil by creating special type of urban growth boundary that could become a nationwide model.
Farmers in California's Central Valley plan this week to unveil a "farmland security perimeter" designed to protect their lands from development. Eight growers in Madera County have "drawn a line in the soil," according to a press release from the American Farmland Trust. The announcement says this strategy "not only ensures the future of agriculture in Madera, but also creates a special type of urban growth boundary that could become a nationwide model." The strategy, to be explained at a September 25 news conference, was created with money from the California Farmland Conservancy Program and the Federal Farmland Protection Program.
