Census Bureau: U.S. Poverty Increases

The U.S. Census Bureau reports that poverty in the nation increased and income went down.

"In its annual report on income and poverty, the Census Bureau said that 1.3 million Americans slipped below the government's official poverty line last year, the first increase since 1993. As a result, 11.7 percent of the population is in poverty, up from 11.3 percent in 2000.But unlike previous recessions, most of the increase in poverty was experienced by white households. "
