"Terrorism, [Joel Klotkin] said is frightening skilled knowledge workers out of major metropolises... most city schools are in disaster condition, the Internet has 'gone global,' the 'virtual economy' is coming, skilled people can live anywhere, and whites especially are fleeing to outer suburbs and rural places. Immigrants energize cities temporarily, but watch out for a second-generation letdown... To survive, he contended, today's center cities need to focus on safety, sound infrastructure and strong schools. And to build a sense of excitement and community from Yuppies to immigrants: 'Successful cities must inspire or die.'"
