What started as a local revolt against car traffic in the San Francisco Bay has turned into a national -- and international -- trend.
"Chris Carlsson and Jim Swanson, both of whom rode their bikes to work, named their idea Critical Mass. They believed bicyclists could announce by taking over the streets that they would no longer be treated like second class roadsters... When riders hit the streets Friday for the 10th anniversary ride of Critical Mass, they will be part of a phenomenon that has spread to hundreds of other cities across the globe where bicyclists demand the same rights as those behind the wheel."
