The Great Lakes Commission is considering a resolution to make Lake St. Clair the sixth Great Lake. The status could bring in federal funding and benefit shipping.
"Lakes Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie and Ontario make up the Great Lakes. A series of rivers connect them, and the St. Lawrence River joins them to the Atlantic.Nestled between lakes Huron and Erie, Lake St. Clair is part of the Great Lakes water system... Now, officials in suburban Detroit's Macomb County have launched a long-shot effort to put the diminutive Lake St. Clair in the same class as its five much larger neighbors... There is more at stake than semantics. Great Lakes status could bring federal funding to the perpetually polluted lake and help the shipping industry."
