Hemlocks in the Northeast are under threat from the woolly adelgid, and environmental pressures are affecting other species as well. But the most volatile and in some ways most frightening scourge of trees at the moment is Sudden Oak Death, which has killed tens of thousands of oaks in coastal California in just a few years.
