A study by American Farmland Trust shows that wasteful land use is the root cause of farmland development.

"Illinois ranked fifth nationally in the amount of prime farmland lost--160,900 acres--between 1992 and 1997, the report said. The state ranked second in the percentage increase in land lost over the previous five years. Illinois showed a 137 percent increase in prime acres lost to development in the five-year period."
