New census data suggests that St. Paul and Minneapolis aren't hollowing out at the core like many of their midwestern counterparts.
"My sense is that there's more of a demand for density and life in the downtowns in those cities," said Alan Berube, a researcher for the Brookings Institution and a co-author of the analysis released today. He hypothesized that reasons for a strong core include the presence of the University of Minnesota, the arts scene and regional policies promoting housing investment in the core."
