Chicago, with funding from the four major wireless carriers, has achieved a major amenity for transit users: 4G internet service along 22 miles of subway tracks in the CTA system.
"They're not promising they'll get you to work on time in the morning, but the folks at the Chicago Transit Authority say they now have something nearly as good: fast Internet in the subway," according to an article by Greg Hinz.
The CTA announced earlier this week that they'd completed full installation of 4G wireless along its entire subway system. "The old network, 2G service, was installed in 2005 and provided coverage only at the stations and platforms," adds Hinz. Now the 4G coverage spans 22 miles of subway tracks.
Of critical importance to the completion of the project: "The project was funded and will be maintained by the four major wireless carriers—T-Mobile, AT&T, Verizon and Sprint—as part of a 20-year deal with the CTA in which the companies are leasing space in the subways for their networks."
