Seventeen years after the first house was built on the western edge of South Florida civilization, the sprawling city of Weston has reached completion.
"With more than 15,000 Weston homes sold, Arvida [the developer] is finishing one of the great success stories in the history of South Florida real estate, transforming 16 square miles of swamp and farmland into one of the country's largest planned developments and one of the most desirable suburban ZIP codes in South Florida." Though environmentalists have decried the draining of wetlands, and New Urbanists cite the development's gated subdivisions and lack of community, Weston remains popular with residents, who recently voted to incorporate into a city to gain control over schools and public services.
