Pushing to become an international showcase and prepare for the 2008 Olympics, Beijing is struggling to show it is thoroughly prepared -- not only in how it moves forward, but in how it gazes back upon a society that fascinates so much of the world...It is modern Asia's paradox, and it plays out dramatically in the build-now, think-later Chinese capital: Develop as fast as you can, but make sure you preserve the old-style attractions that will keep foreign and domestic tourists coming back for more.
