A map of bike commuters also maps the political conflicts in a changing Washington, D.C.
"Over 20% of commuters in Bloomingdale, Mount Pleasant, and Petworth get to work each day primarily using a bicycle," reports Dan Malouf. Malouf dug the data out of a study prepared by the District Department of Transportation for the proposed Eastern Downtown Bike Lane.
Perry Stein picked up on the news of the high number of bike commuters in those neighborhoods and added additional context, i.e., in most parts of the district biking isn't very popular at all. Moreover, bike lanes are a hot button politically in the District, where concerns about gentrification and displacement come into conflict with the demand for alternative transportation facilities. To Stein, that is, the mode share map "helps to explain the impassioned stances on both sides of this not-so-mundane bike lane debate."
