California's vineyards are increasingly unpalatable to environmentalists.

This article looks at how California's vineyards are beginningto respond to environmentalists' growing criticisms of the industry.Environmentalists have long complained that the industry wastes naturalresources, uses excessive amounts of pesticides and despoils thelandscape in regions such as the Napa Valley and the central California coast. Inresponse, the Wine Institute trade groupandthe California Association of Winegrape Growers will "unveil a new codeof'sustainable' practices aimed in large part at making the wine-makingprocess as environmentally friendly as possible."
