Pittsburghs transition from a heavy manufacturing center to one of the world leaders in health care, education, financial services, high technology, and transportation is a shift that began 20 years ago when Pittsburgh lost its steel industry. Few American cities and regions have experienced such a large and abrupt job loss as Pittsburgh and western Pennsylvania. The area responded by striving to reinvent itself, becoming a textbook example of economic renewal.
