"Torrents of controversy pounded the city after the destruction in March of the Maslon House here, which the late Los Angeles architect designed in 1963. In response, city leaders are about to finish the first part of their plan to protect Rancho Mirages culturally important buildings.... The absence of building-preservation rules offered a large target for critics after the Maslon House was demolished."
