"La Plaza Mercado is first and foremost a calculated business decision, based on some unique demographic trends in the neighborhood. During the 1990s, the population in the 14 census tracts that make up the West Vernor community was stable at about 44,000, but the number of Hispanics nearly doubled, displacing mostly non-Hispanic whites. Average household size increased, running counter to the national trend of smaller households."
