Voters in Northern Virginia reject a proposed regional transportation tax that may have faciltated sprawl beyond the Beltway.
"Northern Virginia voters turned down a proposal that would have increased their sales tax by 1/2 percent in order to fund $5 billion in road and mass transit projects. The groups that opposed the tax were unusual in they represented a combination "Smart Growth" proponents and anti-tax conservatives. The majority of the voters in the close-in areas of Arlington in Alexandria are believed to have supported the tax, as it would have provided funding for mass transit improvements."
