Baltimore Approves Bikeshare System (E-Bikes Included)

The newly approved Charm City bikeshare system has a leg up on the competition: 200 of the system's 500 bikes will come with electric pedaling assistance.

Colin Campbell reports: "Beginning in the fall, 500 bicycles will be available for short-term rent around Baltimore, following the city's approval Wednesday of a $2.36 million Charm City Bikeshare contract with Canadian company Bewegen Technologies."

Campbell also notes that 200 of the bikes will feature electric-assisted pedaling, putting the system in an exclusive club among bikeshare systems (Birmingham, Alabama was the first city to launch a bikeshare system that included e-bikes). Campbell provides additional details about the system, including plans for station locations and employment opportunities.
