Despite a tragic fire, Santana Row--a high intensity, upscale mall with apartments and (soon) a hotel--is opening less than 3 miles from retail-challenged Downtown San Jose. Traci Vogel skeptically explores the hyperreality of a "downtown" that doesn't bother to give directions on how to get there by tranist. Another column in the same paper gives an opposing, more favorable view.
