The city of New York has made zoning change to allow an "experiment" on the Queens waterfront that mixes residential and manufacturing uses on the same site.
"In February, the city released a request for proposals for 4.5 acres of property adjacent to Anable Basin, a shipping inlet on the East River.," reports Matt Chavan. "The initiative calls for 1.4 million square feet of development, more space than the Chrysler Building."
The RFP has a unique purpose, however, and will deliver a unique development, reflecting the desire of the de Blasio Administration "to marry housing and manufacturing once again."
"If successful, these projects, along with a novel set of design guidelines created by the city, could shape new developments in old industrial neighborhoods from the South Bronx to Sunset Park, Brooklyn, and Staten Island’s North Shore," adds Chavan.
The article includes more detail about the developer interest in the project, also describing how the project is an attempt to retain a uniquely New York variety of neighborhood character.
