Open Today: the Kansas City Streetcar

Today, Kansas City becomes the first Midwestern city to run modern streetcar service.

"Kansas City on Friday will become the latest American city to invite riders on board a spiffy new downtown streetcar," report Jason Williams and Sharon Coolridge.

Kansas City is the first Midwestern city to add a modern streetcar, according to the article.

In a separate article, Lynn Horsley anticipates the opening of the Kansas City line by reporting on the planned festivities and expected turn out for the big day. "As many as 50,000 people are expected downtown Friday and Saturday for a whole host of festivities and activities associated with the streetcar grand opening and along the 2.2-mile route from River Market to Union Station," writes Horsley.

Horsley reports on the "Smart City" program installed along the route, which includes interactive kiosks and free public WiFi, in a separate article.
