The 2016 Partners in Preservation contest is open until July 5. Now is your chance to #VoteYourPark.
"Twenty national park sites have the chance to win part of two million dollars in corporate funding," reports Becky Little. The 2016 Partners in Preservation contest offers "up to $250,000 for a preservation or restoration project—and it’s up to the public to choose which sites those will be."
As Little explains, each national park, recreation area, monument, memorial, or historic site participating in the contest has proposed a preservation project. Another goal of the contest is to raise awareness about the funding of facilities in the national parks system. One surprising fact, for instance, is that the annual bill for maintenance in national parks is twice as much as appropriated.
Little gathers examples of news outlets advocating for the proposals of their local parks—such as an article by Evan Bush for The Seattle Times and another by Jenny Staletovich for Florida's KeysInfoNet.
