The recent upgrade of a shopping mall near St. Louis cost $237 million, but still lacks sidewalks for those who want to walk to the stores.
There are no sidewalks at the perimeter of the mall in Des Peres, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, and so people on foot and in wheelchairs end up sharing driveways with cars as they walk into the center. The city administrator of Des Peres says there are many more pedestrians than anyone anticipated when the mall opened. Mall management told the paper it has no plans to make any accessibility changes. In addition to the lack of sidewalks, there are no bus stops inside the mall property or in front of the mall. The city may require the mall company to build a sidewalk when it considers the company's request for permission to construct a restaurant in the center.
