Rescue Efforts Underway as Southeast Louisiana Faces Historic Flooding

Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards is describing the flooding in Southeast Louisiana as an "unprecedented and historic flooding event."

"More than 10,000 people are waking up in shelters Monday morning (Aug. 15) after historic flooding during the past few days in Louisiana," reports Carlie Kollath Wells. "The federal government already has declared four parishes -- Tangipahoa, St. Helena, East Baton Rouge and Livingston -- to be major disaster areas."

Kollath Wells is posting regular updates on the page, including information about where people are being rescued, rising and falling river levels, and crisis hotlines.

Merrit Kennedy offers more coverage of the flooding, also describing water levels in Southeast Louisiana as historic and providing photos and video of rescues in the area. Kennedy also reports that more than 100 roads in the area are closed, and at least one major highway has been submerged.
